Writing to Sir Henry Wigram two or three days before the recent General Election, Air Samuel Saunders, of Wellington, who for a quarter of a century' was editor of tho ‘ Lyttelton Times,’ predicted that the approaching contest would result in the return of fifty Coalitionists, including the four Maori meihbers, and _ thirty Labourites and Independents, in the ratio of twenty'-four and six. This was exactly the result with which the polling concluded. That it was great picking may be judged from another paragraph in Air Saunders’s letter: “ Yesterday',’’ it runs, “ I moved around in the interests of people more closely concerned about the result of the polling than I am, and 1 was a little alarmed by the confidence of the ‘ thirty’ group ’ and the anxiety of tho ‘ fifty'.’ Tho Coalition Uniteds have much less confidence than have the Coalition Reformers, and personally I would not be surprised if Air Coates should emerge from the trial of strength with a party (still loyal to tho Coalition, of course) witli a majority' of ten over Air Forbes. ” This prediction was also realised.
