“TIGHTEN YOUR BELT.”
TO THIS BDITOK. Sir, —We liave read through the medium of the daily papers various remedies for the best ways to bring prosperity amongst the peoples of this fair dominion. Another suggestion is “ pull together.” There are thousands asking how are vre going to do it* The author of the “ tight belt ” statement has never had any idea of what a tight belt feeling is. It is all very well for those in exalted positions to propose such remedies for the people who have been dragged down by the want of employment. There is no need for tightening a belt; that has already, been done. It would be more in keeping with the times if we could all pull together, but there is at present such difference in_ opinion it almost seems asking the impossible. What is the good of a belt to tighten when one is almost as thin as a match through the stress of the times, and one cannot see what boat is_ to be used to pull us through? Might I _ suggest that instead of always talking of money and finance the powers that .be will help the unfortunates of this land by, placing us in woi'k—productive work. If there is to be a readjustment of trades and labour awards, let that bo the first consideration. Relief benefits have mostly been on non-paying lines ; let us got back to our professions and trades. First, stop immigration until this fair land is set up with its proper and fair working conditions. ' Take from those who have and are.able to give fairly and reasonably, and be more merciful to those who are down and out. Some of ns are quite unable to get work even though we apply at the unemployed bureaux—the blue ticket holders, the unfortunates. —I am, etc., A.A.H. December 10.
