Y.W.C.A. BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Board of( Directors of the Young Women’s Christian Association was held yesterday. Mrs E. E. Nicolson, president, led the opening devotions, Mrs W. A. Stevely was welcomed as a new member of the Board of Directors. Those present were Mesdames J. Malcolm, A. M. Begg, G. M. Aikman, D. Adamson, H. M'Allum, H. D. Skinner, P. L. Ritchie, J. S. Ross, H, K. Wilkinson, C. B. Barrowclough, and the general secretary. Leave of absence was granted to Mrs J. Malcolm, who leaves Dunedin shortly for a trip abroad. Mrs Nicolson, on' behalf of the board, wished Mrs Malcolm an enjoyable holiday, and asked her to convey greetings to all associations she could find time to visit. Correspondence was received from headquarters office regarding the coming Dominion Conference, the official visit of the new national general secretary early next year, and Dr Koo’s appeal for the relief of distress in China. The 'national minutes dealt with the reply from the Minister of Labour regarding the suggestions made by the associations ■of New Zealand for the relief of unemployment for women, also with the matter of a day of prayer on February 2, the opening - day of the Disarmament Conference, and a report of matters in connection with Flock House girls. A letter was received from the world’s office asking that something be organised to secure relief for China. This was agree to by the board, and various suggestions wero made to accomplish this. A report was given of the relief of unemployment to date. The matter of renovations to the Cafeteria was put in hand, the necessary funds having been secured through the recent jumble sale. Detailed plans were made for the “Street Day,” to be held in February next, various stalls being apportioned to different members of the board and committees. The departmental reports dealt with the concluding functions for the year of the various departments—a social for hostel boarders, a progressive games evening for senior clubs, community gathering for girl citizens, and a speech night dinner for the Hibbcrt Club. Tho summer programme is in full swing, its main activities being swimming, tennis, tramping. Every Thursday evening the senior clubs have planned to bo at home to members and their friends, while the Girl Citizens are holding a social'evening each Tuesday. The membership chart shows gradual progress since last meeting,
most groups having made a beginning to secure the required number of members, whilst some have succeeded in obtaining 50 per cent, of their, quota. A happy interlude in the afternoon’s proceedings was a surprise visit from Mrs H. B. Elder and Mrs J, G. Bogg, both absentee board members who have recently returned from a trip abroad.
