Mr H. H. Sterling, general manager! of the railways, accompanied by mem* bers of the Railway Board, returned,’ north by the express this morning. Mr W. 15. M‘Kay left for Wellington this morning to join the Makura' for Sydney. He is to proceed to lowa (U.S.A.) to take up studies at the Palmer School of Chiropractic. _ Mn M‘Kay was farewelled at the railway, station by a large number of friends.! Mr A. D. Park, Secretary to. the Treasury, Wellington, arrived here yes* terday and returns north to-morrow. Mr William M'Alevey was this morn* ing admitted by His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy as a barrister and solid* tor . of the Supreme Court. At the monthly meeting of the Hos* pital Board last night Mr T. F. Richards was appointed house steward atj the Dunedin Hospital. The resignation of Nurse Malmanchei from the staff of the Pleasant Valley, Sanatorium was accepted at last night’s meeting of the Hospital Board, and the appointment of Nurse D. Williams in, her stead was approved. At the close of the practice of St.; Stephen’s Choir last evening presentations were made to Mr Bert Rawlinson and Miss Bertha Rawlinson. For two and a-half years Mr Rawlinson has been choir leader and Miss Rawlinson organist. The minister of the church, the Rev. Thomas Miller, spoke appreciatively of the services rendered to the, church by Mr Rawlinson and his’i daughter, and conveyed his own andj the choir’s best wishes. In returning! thanks Mr Rawlinson spoke in high] terms of the loyalty and personal char-i acter of the members of the choir. Oc-f casion was also taken for the choir toil make a presentation to Miss Muriel] Riley on the eve of her approaching marriage. A welcome-home social was tendered,; to Dr Clifford and Mrs James, who] have returned on furlough after three;* vears in the Solomon Islands, in tho,Cargill Road Methodist Church onj Wednesday evening. There was a re-1 presentative gathering of members and] friends from all parts of the circuit.jS Mr A. E. Harman took the chair ini the absence of the Rev. H. L. Blamires] (in Christchurch), and on behalf of the; circuit extended a hearty welcome to; the guests of the evening to their home; church. Rev. W. H. Greenslade and, Messrs W. Bryant and W. W. Ashhyj spoke on behalf of different depart- ’< ments of the church, and in welcoming! Dr and Mrs James home congratulated : them on their successful work in the, medical mission field. Both made typical speeches in reply, the. doctor giving some interesting experi-i ences of his work. During the evening! songs were given by Miss Parker and( Mr Rouse, and a recitation by Miss) Brown. The choir, conducted by Mr! G. James, sang an anthem in fine style. ! Supper was provided by the Ladies’* ( Guild, after which opportunity was taken by those present to have a per* sonal chat with Dr and Mrs James.,
