(Received November 27, at 11.10 a.m.) 1 Simultaneously with Lord Lothian’s statement in the House of Lords of firm action to deal with revolutionary; movements, there have been significant large-scale demonstrations, and the showing of the flag by British and Indian troops in several centres throughout India which were prominent in last year’s civil disobedience campaign. In Calcutta over 3,000 troops, with armoured cars, marched through the crowded Indian quarter.; Meanwhile Congress agitation among the peasants in the United Provinces,; urging them to start a campaign for the non-payment of taxes, is rapidly, reaching a head. Serious trouble is anticipated, and drastic action is needed. Six thousand peasants at a meeting approved of the campaign and pledged themselves to withhold the payments or rent and revenue till the Government made more remissions.
