COSTLY DEPUTATIONS
HARBOUR BOARD MEMBER'S PROTEST A HATTER OF ECONOMY When tho monthly accounts were before the Harbour Board last night, Mr F. E. Tyson said ho thought the expense of’ sending a certain deputation to Wellington was between £4O and £SO. The chairman (Mr J. Loudon), in referring to tho matter elsewhere, had stated - that Mr Moller had been unable to go to Wellington, and Mr Tyson wont on to say that while Mr Moller might ho commiserated with on not being able to avail himself of tho visit to Wellington, ho (Mr Tyson) thought the board was to bo congratulated on savin" at least £l2. The amount involved might seem very small »n view of the satisfactory result of the deputation’s visit, but ho thought that largo deputations wore absolutely unnecessary. Ho thought tho chairman of the board, with the executive olliccr whoso department was affected, together with a stenographer who could be obtained in Wellington, was quite sufficient. It might bo argued that tho larger tho deputation the greater the possibility or probability of success, but if there was anything in that argument, then it was only logical to contend that more success would bo obtained if every member of tho board went. He thought that when a deputation was appointed to go to Wellington, it was only a matter of courtesy that every member should bo advised and his consent obtained before the deputation was appointed. Tho Chairman said that in that particular case there were exceptional circumstances, otherwise ho agreed with Mr Tyson that there was no necessity for a'lot of members to go. Mr Tyson: Wo are trying to economise. Tho accounts, amounting to £13,279, wore passed for payment.
