VOTE-SPLITTING.
TO TUB XDITOX. “ Country, Not Self ” wishes to purchase the withdrawal of Messrs Black and Cameron on behalf of the Coalition. Ho seems to be of the opinion that desperate circumstances warrant desperate expedients. It is more than probable, however, that he has done more harm than half a dozen superfluous candidates could ever have done. Tho electors, whatever party bias they may show, stand united against tho introduction of the illicit tactics—the graft and buying and selling practices—that have corrupted the morals of tho politics of tho United States. They will resent any attempt to insert tho thin edge of tho wedge in this country, and an expression of that resentment made on election day will servo to indicate that tho electors_ of this British dominion are not going to prostitute British honour to tho cause of party or class politics. A Coalition supporter speaks on behalf of his party when he seeks to put a price upon the head of our mayor. Let tho answer be no halfhearted indication. Bo British and as Britishers vote for clean politics. The Labour organisation stood against tho un-British practice of applying the political gag. It stands also against Coalition graft. It may bo assumed that ns our chief citizen Mr Black will express himself upon tho insult offered his high office. Ho owes it to tho citizens to remove the foul stain upon our civic name, and it may be confidently anticipated that, with Mr Cameron, ho will answer the graft party by pursuing his candidature. —I am, etc., Alpha. November 25.
