Mr Thomas Harland stated that when the council cut down pine trees in front of his section at Broad Bay, some of his fruit trees were damaged. He asked for some explanation from the council in that connection,—The engineer explained that ho thought tho land belonged to another man from whom ho received permission to go on the land, and it was not till Mr Harland’s letter came in that ho knew that the section referred to belonged to him.—lt was decided that a letter be sent to Dir Ha inland in terms of the engineer’s explanation, and that regret he expressed that damage had been done to his property. Steps would bo taken to clean up tho section, and if Mr Harland desired it, tho council would replace the two fruit troes destroyed. Mrs E. It was also decided that the constable’s attention be drawn to tho matter of cycling on tho path. Mir W. Brookman, secretary of tho Macandrew Bay Relief Committee, forwarded a communication from the Minister in charge of unemployment to Sir Chas. Statham, in which it was stated that if money collected for relief purposes were expended on materials and the local body was willing to act as employer and find the necessary supervision, the Unemployment Board would favourably consider a proposal to have the work of improving the mud fiat carried out under the No. 5 scheme. The writers, who had been in the habit of landing passengers there in the past, had been notified by Air .Miller that it would now bo necessary to obtain his permission to do so, and that a - fee of sixpence per passenger would bo charged. The writers thought that the action of tho .Defence Department (owners of the wharf) in leasing a public utility of that sort, although possibly quite legal, was detrimental to the public welfare, and as no notice of the intention to lease the wharf was mad© public they desired the council’s support in a protest to the Minister of Defence, and in asking that the wharf b® reopened for general use or handed over to the Harbour Board.—lt was decided to support tho protest, the chairman and clerk to write to the Defence Department on the matter.
