HIBERNIAN DEBATING CLUB

The eminently successful session of the above club was terminated with an enjoyable banquet at St. Joseph’s Hall. The president (Mr A. Cillick) presided, and in welcoming the assemblage apologised for the unavoidable absence of His Lordship the Bishop •(who sent his good wishes for a successful function), and other prominent members who were unable to attend. He then proposed the loyal toast, which was duly honoured, ns were the following:— ‘'The Club,” proposed by Mr A. J. Howling, who paid a tribute to the fine work of the executive, and especially of the president. Mr Gillick, in responding, gave a brief review of the activities of the club during the past six months, and recalled its notable achievements since its inception. ' Ho spoke of prominent members who, through their departure from the city, had severed their active association with it. They and their good work were, however, not forgotten. The toast of “The Hierarchy and Clergy ” was ably proposed by Mr J. P. Ward, and responded to by Rev. Father Tylee, Adm. “ The H.A.C.R. Society ” was \ proposed by Mr V Pledger and responded to by Mr J. J, Marlow, jun.; “Sister Clubs,” by Mr G. O’Connell, and responded to by Mr Kerr (St. Patrick's Chib, South Dunedin) ; “The Press.” by Mr W. G. H. M‘Donnell, responded to by the ‘ Tablet ’ representative; “The Performers” by Mr J. Toner, responded to by Mr J. J. Kennedy; “ The President,” by Mr J. P. Ward. Mr Gillick, in reply, tendered sincere greetings for the festive season and expressed the hope that all would reassemble to advance the intei ests of the club in the coming year. At intervals during the evening a piano solo was given by Mr A. J. Merchant, recitations by Messrs J. Flynn. J. P. Ward, and W. C. H, M'Donnell. and humorous stories were contributed by Mr J. J. Kennedy,
