CHESS
: r WIRELESS MATCHES WITH SYDMEY For years past chess matches between players in different countries have been played by means of telegraphs and cables, but the development of wireless has now introduced a new _ means of communication, and last night a match was played between an Otago team and a team from the Millions Club in Sydney. Mr L. D.' Stroud (ZL4AD> was in charge of the wireless arrangements at the Dunedin end, and he was assisted by Messrs G. Samson (ZL4AC), R. Robinson (ZL4AM), and J, C. Callender (ZL4DT). The transmission set used locally and in Australia was a Harley transmitter, and all those assisting were enthusiastic amateurs. The Sydney calls were VK2RC, • VK2RT, VK2HXJ, and YK2HY. No difficulty was experienced at either end, and six games were.commenced at 8.30. Progress was not too fast, because the Sydney moves had to be relayed by land line from the Millions Club.
The players and openings were as follow (Otago names being given first); — J. B. Dunlop v. H. F. Crane (Evans Gambit). W. G. Stenhouse v. E. G. Calvert (Queen’s Gambit Declined). L. D. Coombs v, S. Henderson (Queen’s Gambit Declined). O. Balk and T. Thomas (King’s Gambit Declined).
R. M'Dermid v. J. Rutherford (Philodor’s Defence). Dr G. Barnett v. A, Ferguson (Queen’s Pawn). Otago had the move on the ’ odd boards. From every point of view the experiment of playing chess' bv short wave wireless was highly successful, the operators at each end giving every satisfaction. At 1 .o’.cloc 1 - +’iis morning (11 p.m. Sydney time) play ceased, and five games were unfinished. These will be adjudicated bv Mr C. J. Purdy, of' Sydney. Two of these games are in Otago’s favour, the other + ,, * , ee Wine even. The finished game was agreed upon ns a draw, the Sydney player having to leave early. The local players were operating from the home of Mr and Mrs Stroud. St. Clair, and the Ota mi Chess Chib is much indebted to them for their hospitality. - -
