PUBLIC LIBRARY LOSSES ONE OFFENDER A SCHOOL PUPIL Losses due to deliberate theft, in on* instance by a pupil of a public school, are reported by tho Library Committee to the City Council. The report states :—Tho loss is ■’ reported with regret of two volumes from the stock of the reference department. The books in question were ‘ The Life of Shackleton ’ and ‘ History of Western Education.’ The first named disappeared on the evening of September 30 at a time when the reference library was crowded with pupils from the public schools, who were consulting authorities for the purpose of the forthcoming Navy League competitive essay. The second volume disappeared during ’ tho month of July, and in this case the loss of the book affected a number of students who were using it for their theme. The losses are undoubtedly due to deliberate theft, and it is to be very greatly regretted that the persons concerned could so far forget themselves as to steal works fr- a free library. -The fact that- ‘ Tho Life of Shackleton’ was obviously stolen by a pupil from one' of tho public schools makes tho matter worse, and it is hoped that tho individuals responsible for such a mean action will take the- earliest opportunity of making redress by returning the stolen volumes.
