SERIOUS SIDING ACCIDENT
AMPUTATION FOLLOWS MUTILATION RAILWAY ENGINEER'S TERRIBLE INJURIES Apparently no person saw the accident at Burnside yesterday, when Mr Charles Gardiner Wilson, tho Assistant District Railway Engineer, was run over bv a train. Mr Wilson had left his office in Dunedin shortly after 2 p.m. to make an official visit to Burnside, and ho was carrying out his work on the New Zealand Refrigerating Company’s siding when ho was cut down by tho shunting train, which passed, over his legs just above his ankles. Whiles the arrival of the ambulance from the city was awaited, first aid was given to the seriously injured engineer by an employee of Messrs Reid and Grav. Dr Linden arrived on the scene a minute or so before tho ambulance, and Mr Wilson was brought into the Dunedin Hospital without delay. He was suffering severely from shock and loss of blood. A transfusion was made and an operation was carried out, both his feet being amputated, ft was reported to-dav that, after a bad night, Mr Wilson was a little easier in condition.
Mr Wilson, who is a single man, residing at Ballymena, High street, has been assistant'to the District Railway Engineer at Dunedin for over five years. He is extremely popular in tho service, being an able and very com-, pardonable man.
