LINKS OF EMPIRE
APPOINTMENTS OF GOVERHORSGENERAL COMMENT BY ‘ THE TIMES 1 Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, November 5. (Received November 6, at 8.30 a.m.) ‘The Times,’ in a leading article, says i—“ The greatest circumspection must be used in tampering with the formal links which bind the Empire together. Certainly a link will be severed if the dominion Governors-Gemeral are merely to become the nominees of the dominion Governments which are in power at the time of the appointment. There seems to bo an impression in some of the dominions that a GovernorGeneral is a mere Jay figure,- affixing his signature like a rubber stamp to Ministerial documents. No conception could be more erroneous. A GovernorGene ral represents the King, acting as His Majesty would if he resided in tho dominion. It does not follow that the dominion Government should give ;up its voice in the selection of a GovernorGeneral. There ought to be no difficulty in a mutually satisfactory choice.” ~-
