UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF FUNDS.

IO THU EDITOR. Sir —ln a previous letter f deplored the fact that £lO5 15s 9d had been expended on wages to run a rovno for a week. Since then, being of a very inquisitive turn of mind. I have found out that the cost in expenses for that week was £290 2s—not a very creditable state of affairs to the promoters and management. 1 believe if f saw the list of the men who received payment I would see some familiar names; and they have since had a party at the Town Hall at a cost of £8 10s, with sundries £lO 4s Id. There may be some excuse for these people, who have always been getting something in the shape of wages for any little services rendered; they even cannot give what others are delighted to do. I can tell them from my experience that the happiest time of our lives is when wc are thinking of something to help our fellows. The Press has constant reports of parties who go out to institutions composed of sick or elderly people. Do they think of the expense they have incurred? No, but of the sunshine and happiness they have given to others. The art union realised approximately £BOO, and no one was paid for his services. I want it distinctly understood that 1 have a perfect right to know and to criticise either within or without any acts which I do not agree with. 1 am making this statement because ] have got no information from anyone in connection with the Trades Hall, so 1 do not wish anyone to lose his employment. There should be no secrets. —Lam, etc.. Hunky Gore. November 6.
