ROWING CLUBS’ OPENINGS

NORTH END The North End Boating Club held a very successful opening ceremony m tho boat shed ou Saturday afternoon, Air W. J. Rennick presiding over an attendance of about 100. In opening the function the Chairman welcomed ’all present "and wished the club every success in its coming season. The chief toast of the day was ‘ The iNorth End Boating; Club,’; which was ’•proposed.by Mr E. V.'Fairbairn. He congratulated the club on its fine performances last season and on the progress that had been made since the club’s plant and shed had been wrecked. He remarked upon the state of the plant and shed at ■ the present day. In reply Mr P. Verngreen (club captain) thanked all present tor their attendance and Mr Fairbairn tor his kindly remarks regarding the club, tie hoped the club would surpass its previous season’s performances, and stated that it would be more pleasing to members to see more coxswains taking an interest in the sport. A fine trophy had been donated to the club by one of its very old members for competition among the coxswains, and would go to the boy who steered the most winners during the season. ~ , .. Another important toast was that ox “The Otago Amateur Rowing Association,” which was in the hands of Mr A. Allan. He mentioned the assistance that the association had given the sport in the past, and the time it had spent in tho betterment of rowing, while it had always supplied a good list ot ofiicials for the various regattas. Ho also made mention of the assistance the association had given the club when it lost its shed and plant. Mr E. V. r airbairn replied, and stated that the club was fortunate in having good delegates to attend the association meetings. The O.R.A. was a body which had very little funds, and could not help the clubs financially, but it was ready to help any club m the interest of the sport. ~ “ Sister Clubs ” • was another toast, proposed by Mr Mark Higfins and responded to by Messrs W. I‘Connell' (Port Chalmers Rowing Club), E. W. Pickford (Otago Rowing Club), M. T. Budd (Macandrew Bay Rowing Club), J. Vivian (North-east Harbour Boating Club), and Thorn (Port Chalmers Sailing Club). Following the toast list the club s patron (Mr G. D. Wright) declared the season open, after which refreshments were provided. Some time later three crews went out for a short spin.
