LONDON, September 10 (Received September 31, at 10.30 a.m.) Miss Peggy Duncan, aged nineteen, a South African, swam the Channel m sixteen and a-quarter hours. She landed at Dover, where she was hailed on her wonderful achievement. Miss Duncan made a remarkable spurt over the last 100yds as if she was competing in a race. She was not exhausted, and climbed out unaided. FIRST TIME THIS YEAR (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 10. (Received September 11, at 11 a.m.) The exact time taken by the nine-teen-year-old South African girl, Peggy Duncan, to swim the Channel was 16h ISinin. She is the first person to swim the Channel this year. The coldness of the water and the flood tide, which swept her away from her course when she was quite close to ■ Dover Harbour, spoilt her chances of creating a record. • Sixteen people have previously swum the Channel, six of them being women. Only Captain Webb, Burgess, and Sullivan have succeeded in swimming from England to France. Miss Duncan hopes to attempt this next year.
