A GIFT OF £2,000,000 TO ENGLAND

An American citizen, Mr Edward Harkness, lias made tho magnificent gift of about £2,000,000 to bo laid out for tho benefit of England. There are Jive trustees—Mr Stanley Jiaklwin, Mr John Buchan, Lord Macmillan, Sir Josiah Stamp, and Sir dames Ervine—and tlio secretary is an 'eminent Civil Servant. There are to bo, according to tho ‘ Manchester Guardian’s ’ London correspondent, no conditions imposed on the trustees in the disposal, and no definition of its objects, hut that it will ho used for educational and cultural causes. It is believed that it was his respect for Air Baldwin’s character and the side of England that ho represented that decided Mr Harkness to make this gift. Mr Harkness is said to have much in common with Air Baldwin—knowledge and love of the country, and especially its traditional ways and modest beauties, and lie is also a lover of art and letters. Ho founded the Commonwealth Fund, which gives thirty scholarships iu the United States at £6OO a year to British graduates, ami lie has given great bequests to American universities—£■2o,l)oo.ooo to Yale and £1,000,000 to Harvard, it is expected, from the character of the trustees, that the preservation of country life and beauty will be on© of the causes that will got their chief attention, but nothing, of course, has yet been, considered.
