WEEK-END DEPREDATIONS

YOUTH PLEADS GUILTY TO SEVERAL OFFENCES COMMITTED FDR SENTENCE In the Police Court this morning, before Mr J. It. Bartholomew, S.M., Arthur Edwin Allprcss, eighteen years of age, was charged, with stealing cigarettes to the value of £2, the property of Mary M‘Mil!an; with breaking and entering the shop of Denhy Terry with intent to commit crime; with breaking and entering the Star Stores and stealing money and goods to a total value of £5 11s sd; with breaking and entering the shop of J. 11. M'Konzio and stealing money and goods to the value of £l3 13s 2d; with breaking and entering the shop of Mary Jane Dcas and stealing goods to a value of 8s; with breaking and enter ing the shop of Walter Booth and stealing money and goods to a value of £2 8s; with breaking and entering the shop of Ella Elizabeth Garrett and stealing 16s 3d in money. He was represented by Mr L. 11. Simpson. Ida Booth said that on Saturday, July 12, she locked up the shop of Booth and Hook securely at 12.45 p.m., and left about £1 worth of change in the till. On Monday she found that one of the windows had been interfered with, and that someone had entered the shop and stolen about 10s. She was unable to say if any stock was missing. Mary Jane Deas said she securely locked up her shop on Saturday, July 5, at 9.30, and on the following Mon day discovered that the shop had been entered and some sweets and cordials were missing.

William Arthur Pitcaitlily, manager for the Star Stores, said ho securely locked up the shop at 12.30, p.m. on Saturday, August 2, and at 11.30 p.m. on tho same day he returned to the shop, but again locked it up securely. Everything then appeared to he m order. On the following Monday he discovered that the shop had been entered and £5 8s 3d was found to be missing from the cash. Denby Terry said he securely locked up his shop on the afternoon of Saturday, August 2, and on the Monday morning found that entrance had been effected to tho shop, but as far as ho could ascertain nothing was missing. John Percy Corder said that J. R. M'Kenzie’s shop in George street was securely locked up by him on the afternoon of August 16, and on tho Monday ho discovered a shortage in his cash to the extent of £l2 17s 2d, and that cigarettes to the value of 16s were missing. Ho then discovered that entry to tho shop had been effected through a window at the back of the premises. . Ella Elizabetli Garrett said she securely locked up her shop on Saturday, August 30, at about 12.30 p.m., and left 18s 3d in a safe, the door of which was open. On tho following day she called at'the shop but noticed noth ing irregular. On tho Monday she found that a window catch at the hack of the shop had been broken, and that the shop had been entered. She also discovered that 16s 3d was missing. Detective Jenvey said he had interviewed the accused respecting the charges, and he had made a statement, admitting having committed the offences In the statement, witness said that ho was an assistant projectionist at the Roxy Theatre. There was a juvenile associated with him in the offences.

The accused pleaded guilty to each offence on which evidence had been taken, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence op each charge. On the charge ot theft he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within twelve months. Bail was allowed in accused's own recognisance of £IOO and one surety of £IOO or two of £SO, a condition being that ho reports daily to the police.
