If this .was started every union would want it. Air Harris said ho did not think the Wellington application for an outside referee was made because" of dissatisfaction with local referees. It was the principle they wished to support. Air Bagley said the Wellington referee in’tho, match with Otago last year was very satisfactory. At the . same time'ho agreed with the idea of outside referees for : Ranfurly Shield games. Air Nelson said ho thought it reasonable to ask for outside referees for Shield matches, but ho did not think it necessary that unions should _ be put to the extra expense in getting outside referees for representative games. It was only fair that local referees should get a chance for representative games. He moved tnat tho Wellington Union be informed that Otago preferred to follotv tho usual procedure of selecting a referee from the five names of local referees submitted. In reply to Mr Spedding, tho Chairman said that if a deadlock arose he thought they would have to give way to! the wishes of the visiting .team. Tho motion -was carried. NOT ALTOGETHER ADVISABLE. Flenry, a member of,tho Otago Referees’ Association, the high appreciation felt by all at the excellent control displayed by him in tho'Hawke's Bav v. Southland match. His task had been a. most arduous cue, but tho manner in which he performed his duties was a. credit to himself aucl tho Otago Union. ... The Chairman said bo did not think it was altogether advisable that unions should express their appreciation, of j referees under these circumstances. They might possibly start expressing disapproval. . , ', ~ It was decided to receive tho letter and to send a copy to Air Floury ... PAYNE TROPHY 3IATCH. The charges were laid by the executive of tho Referees’ -ssociation. Mr Borham claimed that the committee had no jurisdiction to deal with the matter. Mr Harris said that tho committee claimed that it was perfectly justified in inquiring into the, matter. Mr Boreham said that ho was charged with using abusive language. In that case Mr Sutherland had. las remedy in another place. Air Harris: Ho also has his remedy hero if ho prefers. Mr Sutherland gave evidence respecting the remarks made to him by Boreham. He said that Boreham had charged him with using ! his influence as a member of tho Appointment Board to secure certain referees when the Alhambra, team was playing. Air Sutherland called evidence regarding what Boreham had said to him on tho park. Mr Boreham said ho appeared before the committee as a private individual and not as coach of Southern Club.
