CREW’S GREAT FEAT IN GALE. With a i-udder improvised from a trawl door, the steam trawler Witham arrived safely at Grimsby a few weeks ago, as the result of a remarkable teat ot tenacity by her captain and crew. Ihi vessel was rendered helpless when lie rudder poet smashed during a gale in the North Sea. Throughout the night and tho next f ay Skipper Howard and all hands struggled to improvise a rudder while the ship pitched m the gale. Other ships, attracted by the Wilham’s “ out of control ” signal, stood by, hoping to pick up a salvage prize, but Skipper Howard refused all offers of a tow. Finally, after twenty-four hours’ toil, whicl included boring holes 1 through 4in thick hardwood with red-hot pokers, the jury rudder was fixed and the Witham navigated home.
