MANCHESTER UNITY
The Loyal United Juvenile Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., held a well-attended meeting in the M.U. Hall, Stuart street, the N.G., Bro. L. Janies, presiding. The secretary of the Juvenile Council wrote notifying that the annual initiation competition would be held on August 30. Tho half-yearly balance-sheet, presented by the secretary (Bro. Sharp) showed the various funds to have steadily increased, and was adopted without discussion. Two candidates were initiated, and one proposition for membership was received. The lodge then adjourned, and parents and friends were admitted. A lantern lecture on ‘ Tho Ascent of Mount Aspiring ’ was delivered by Messrs Miller and Ellis, who were members of he first amateur party to accomplish the ascent. The lecture, which was illustrated by some eighty slides, proved extremely interesting. At the close of the. evening the lecturers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks and appreciation.
The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Princess Mary Lodge was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Forbury corner. The N.G. (Sister R. Raffills) presided over a good attendance of members. An invitation from the Loyal Milton Lodge to attend a “ victory ” social, to celebrate the lodge’s winning the South Otago initiation competition, was received, a number of members signifying their intention of attending the function. Nominations for office were received, and it was decided to extend an invitation to the district officers to bo present at the half-yearly installation next lodge night. One new member was initiated, and three proposals for membership were submitted. The lodge closed early to enable members to take part in the official visit to the Hand and Heart Lodge, some thirty members attending this function. The Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge mot in the Lodge Hall, Stuart street, when there was an excellent attendance of officers and brethren, the N.G., Bro. S N. Cotton, being in tho chair. One candidate was initiated. Good nominations were received for the various offices in the lodge, tho installation to take place next meeting. This being the occasion of the official visit from sister lodges, the N.G. extended a welcome to over 100 visiting urban lodges. The members of tlio district executive, headed by the P.G., Bro. T. Michelle, later visited the meeting, and were welcomed with the customary honours. A pleasant hour was then spent in harmony, a number of brethren contributing appreciated items. The visitors were then entertained at supper, and the lodge resumed. The toasts of visiting brethren and the District Executive were honoured, the N.G.’s of tho visiting lodges responding. Tho district officers acknowledged the toast, the P.G.M. making special reference to the juvenile movement, and appealing to the adult brethren to assist with their active support. At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Dunedin Lodge, held in the vStuart Street Hall, the N.G. Bro. J. W. Roberts presided over a good muster of members. Visitors from the Centenary, Albion, and Hand and Heart Lodges were welcomed, and a visit was later received from the P.G.M. Bro. T. Michelle, and P.D.G.M. Bro. E. Longworth, representing the District Executive. In response to a communication from the Provincial C. Secretary, a Vigilance Committee was set up to work in conjunction with the Central Committee. Nominations of officers were opened and adjourned until next meeting, when the installation will be held. The secretary (Bro. J. W. Smeaton) and the treasurer (Bro. D, F. Barry) entertained the lodge. Members and visitors _ took part in a card tournament, a. visitor, P.G. Bro.C. Hunt (Hand and Heart), proving tho first prize winner. P.G. Bro. Foster gained second prize, and Bro. Hare tho “booby.” Supper was then dispensed, and a vote of thanks to tho hosts concluded an enjoyable function. The P.G.M. and the P.D.G.M. afterwards addressed the meeting. _ Bro. Michelle stated that this was his first visit to the lodge in his official capacity, and he thanked members for their cordial welcome. Executive matters were at present quiet, but ho reminded brethren to Be on the alert for any cases of hardship or distress amongst members of the order. During the present depression assistance would bo necessary in some cases, and a district distress fund existed for this purpose. Bro. E. Longworth stated that ho was pleased to be associated with the P.G.M. on his first official visit to Loyal Dunedin Lodge. The P.G.M., who resided at Roxburgh, could not visit them regularly, therefore his present appearance in the lodge was appreciated. Bro. Longworth referred to the matter of hospital visitation, which was at present being carried out by Bro. C. Hunt (Hand and Heart) and Bro. C. West (Dunedin). Ho wished to thank these two brethren for their services in this connection, which were appreciated by the district. He trusted that the sick visitors of the various lodges would report promptly on any instances of members being in hospital. The visitors’ toast was responded to by Centenary, Albion, and Hand and Heart brethren. Prior to closing the meeting one proposition for membership was received. There was a very good attendance of members at the meeting of Prince of Wales Juvenile Lodge, N.G. Bro. G. Dougherty presiding. The members of the Juvenile Council and brethren of the Loyal United Juvenile Lodge were officially received and welcomed. The officers' for tho ensuing term were elected and duly installed as follow N.G., Bro. J. Duggie; V.G., Bro. B. Johnston; E.S., Bro. Throp: warden, Bro. A. Cook; guardian, Bro. G. Johnson; conductor, Bro. W. Waugh; G.M., Bro. D. Sutherland. The now officers wore congratulated and suitably responded. It was decided to enter for the annual initiation competition. The following brethren acknowledged tho visitors’ toast: —President Bro. W. Mowatfc and members of the Juvenile Council, Bro. Huntley (Loyal United), Bro. P. Young (District Executive), and P.P.G.M.s Bros. Clark and Johnston. The Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge hold its fortnightly meeting with an average attendance of officers and members. The N.G., Bro. Welsh, presided. The half-yearly election of officers was hold over until Juno 17, when the appointment of a Vigilance Committee will also be made. Four proposals for membership were received, _ A discussion ensued on tho social side of tho meetings, and arrangements made for various functions during the •winter syllabus. After business had been completed a social hour was spent at cards.
