MENDELSSOHN'S MASTERPIECE
Undoubtedly during the first half of the nineteenth century no star shone with such brilliance on the musical horizon as Felix Mendelssohn, the com-, poser of the 'Elijah’ oratorio. Genius, united to a charming personality, favourite circumstances, care and devotion of loved ones, offers a combination of fortunate happenings and surroundings. Such seldom falls to the lot of mortals. Ever the true artist, never, satisfied with anything but the best—such was the man who wrote ‘ Elijah.’ Concerning the oratorio, the work is so familiar to Dunedin music-lovers that it is unnecessary to refer to its glorious structure as a true cathedral of surpassing strength and beauty. Many have listened with great pleasure, to the marvellous excellence of those many favourite numbers which we all know.- Space will not permit of enumerating some of the glorious gems of soloists and chorus. This masterpiece of the genius Mendelssohn will be given in the Town Hall on Tuesday next by the Dunedin Choral Society, under the baton of Dr Galway.
