INDUSTRIAL STRESS

NEW SOUTH WALES THE GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, May 14. (Received May 14, at 10 a.m.) The Premier (Mr Bavin), in the Assembly, paid the forty-four-hour week was an unmitigated disaster to the people whom it was intended to benefit. In moving the second reading of the Industrial Arbitration Amendment Bill, Mr Bavin said a dissolution on this issue would involve a delay of several months. In the face of the critical economic and industrial conditions which prevailed the Government did not feel justified in taking a course which would involve the postponement of any effective relief for that period. The State was faced with industrial conditions that were unprecedented in its history. The vote on the second reading of the Forty-four Hours Bill will be taken to-night. The Ministry is confident of victory.
