PLUNKET SHIELD

OTAGO V. CANTERBURY VISITORS BAT FIRST [Pa United Pcsss Association.] CHRISTCHURCH. February 28. It is many years since a match between Canterbury and Otago, especially a Plunkct Shield match, evoked so little interest as the annual match which was commenced at Lancaster Park to-day. Neither side had anything like its best eleven. Five or six southerners who would have been chosen could they have made the journey were missing, and these included Blunt, Shepherd, and Dickinson Canterbury were, in much the same position, Page and Alerritt being among five or six who were not available.

When play was commenced shortly after 11 the wicket looked perfect, and the out field in good order. The weather was beautifully fine, the only objection to it being a rather cold and boisterous easterly, which blew with great consistency throughout the day. The Otago skipper won the toss, and went in with Giles. Burrows opened the bowling from the south end to Strang, a maiden of perfect length balls resulting. Gibbs was the other bowler, and a single came off it. Ten soon went up, six byes being included in the number. In Gibb’s third over Cromb missed Giles in the slips. Twenty came up in twenty minutes, and 30 soon followed, chiefly as the result of nice cutting by Strang, who had reached 20. Giles lifted Burrows to the square-leg boundary, and Cromb replaced Gibbs. Strang drove Burrows for a nice four, and at 48 R. 0. Talbot replaced Burrows, A hefty square cut to Strang sent 50 up for forty minutes’ play. Six runs later Giles stop--ped a straight one with his pads. 56 I—lß.

Knight followed, but after getting a single and a pair he had his off stump smashed by a fast one from Cromb. 61—2—3.

Cnvnnagh joined Strang, and got Cromb nicely to leg for a three, in Talbot’s next over Strang lifted one to G. L. Talbot at deep point, and paid , the penalty. 61—3—31. Galo was next, and at 69> ? Oibbs replaced Talbot. Play became very slow, and at 75 (». L. Talbot relieved Cromb. Cavanagh drove him finely for four, but then Gale was caught at tho wicket. 81—4—3.

Barron partnered Cavanagh, and runs came a bit faster, mostly in singles. With one short of the hundred R. O. Talbot replaced Gibbs, and 100 went U4> for an hour and fortyeight minutes’ play. Six runs later Cromb took the ball from G. L. Talbot. Only singles came for a time, bat then Barron broke the spell with a pretty square-cut for four. In Cromb’s next over Cavanagh tried to pull a straight ball to square-leg and wis clean bowled. 113—-5—31. Moloney joined Barron, and opened with a four through the slips, bis partner responding with a fine off-drive to the fence. Talbot were the bowlers, *uicl with only two singles added Burrows beat Barron all the way. 120 —6—23. Dunning was next, and was missed in the slips by Roberts off Burrows before he bad scored. Moloney put Talbot prettily to leg for four, and then snicked;him to leg for another quartet. At 143 Gibbs took the ball from lalbot, but a separation came from the other end, Burrows getting Dunning Ibw. 113—7 —1. The change came off, being caught in the slips. 105—9—7. Lemin was the last man, and Monk lifted Talbot to the off boundary. Lemin got a single, and then I albot bowled him. The- innings had lasted th ree hours and ten minutes. CANTERBURY AT THE WICKETS. Kerr and Cromb opened Canterbury s innings, Dunning from the south end and Lemin being the bowlers. Off the latter Cx’ornb got a pretty 4 to leg, a 2 to the on, and a single. A pretty 4 to leg off Dunning took him past doubles and three more beautiful 4’s made IS off the over. The 20 had gone up in eight minutes. Thirty and 4u quickly followed, two 4’s to Cromb oil Dunning taking that batsman past the thirties. Then, however, lie was Ibw to Dunning. 41—1 —. Roberta wns next, and tho scoring slackened at once. At 49 Monk took the ball from Lemin, and 50 went up for thirty-one minutes’ play. Only singles came for a time, but then Roberts got Dunning prettily to _ the leg boundary. An equally stylish 3 to Kerr sent 70 up. Cavanagh replaced Dunning, and Kerr reached 20 with a single. Kerr made a mishit and sent the softest of catches back to Monk, who juggled with it and finally knocked it out of reach. A lovely off drive to Roberts went to the fence, sending 100 up for an hour and seven minutes’ play. Kerr got two 4’s off Monk’s nest over, passing the 40 mark. At 116 Lemin relieved Monk, and in bis second over clean bowled Roberts with a good one. 127—2—41. Jacobs filled tho gap. and Dunning replaced Moloney. The newcomer opened with a nice off drive for 4, but play then quietened down Dunning was bowling the log theory, and soon had all bis men but one on the on side of the wicket. 'Moloney replaced Lemin at 163. and 3 runs later Kerr 'went out to a slow one and was stumped. 160— 3 70. Crawford followed, and a fine straight drive for 4 by Jacobs saw the Otago total passed. Runs came steadily. but at 189 Jacobs lifted an easy catch to Strang at mid off. 189—4—28. R. O. Talbot joined bis skipper, and the latter on drove Dunning for 4. Crawford sent a full toss to square leg for 4, sending up 200 for two hours and ten minutes’ play, Dunning gave the ball to Monk, and Talbot hit him for throe 2’s in his first over.
