NOTES ON THE RACING

~~i j [By St. Claie.]

The betting between Gayoma (£195), Taramoa (£l93s), and Oriflamb (£152) in the Mataura Hurdles was close, the other two showing long prices. Taramoa went out to the front and led Night over the first two hurdles, Gayoma hitting the first very hard. At the stand hurdle Taramoa stood off too far away, and crashed through it, giving Dempster a nasty fall. Orinamb took charge and led Red Heather and the-first day ! s winner along the back and across the top. At the turn into the straight Red Heather led Gayoma up on the inside, and the later was on terms with Oriflamb at the last hurdle. In the run to the post Gayoma wore down Oriflamb and beat him by a neck. Red Heather was six lengths away third, aAd Night, whose rider lost a stirrup iron, was a bad last. Battle Maid and Birdwood were withdrawn from the Hokonui Hack Handicap, for which Jock o’ Hazeldean (£366) was made nearly an even-money chance,, with. Moitui (£212), Flying Binge (£129), Abbeville (£l2ss), and Vinegrovo (£110) the best backed of the others. On Watch and Pukemaori were troublesome at the barrier, and the latter was badly left. Crossbow was the first to show out, but before going a furlong gave way to On Watch, who at the end of three furlongs was joined by Night Maid and Meitni. Jock o’ Hazeldean and Insolence lying rest. Racing across the top both On Watch and Me'tni dropped out. and the favourite led Insolence and Night Maid. Racing down the straight the favourite drew away to win easily by four lengths from Vinegroge, who finished wen and beat Insolence by a short neck for second money, Abbeville was close up fourth, just in front of Night Maid and Crossbow./

All started in the Autumn Handicap, for, which King Balboa (£309), Pink Note (£235), Red Sea (£22Bs). Stealth (£206), and Money Mine (£175) were the best backed. From an excellent walking-in start King Balboa, on the rails, Money Mine. Red Sea. and Camisacler , led through the straight. Pink Note and Red Sea being next. As the field turned into the back King Balboa was with Camisidcr just in front of Money Mine and Red Sea, and there was no change in the leading division till approaching the far turn, where Money Mine moved up to the leaders. He was first round the turn, and then the favourite disappeared. Money Mine led Camisader, Stealth, and Rink Note into the straight. Stealth who had a 51b allowance, finished the best and beat Money Mine by a neck, with Gieseler’s third candidate, Camisader, half a length away third, with Pink Note a head off fourth, and John Bradbury, Evening, and Red Sea next.

Nelbar, and Alva Lass into the straight, the others being well spread out. Alva Lass finished very fast down the straight,*and only failed by a bare length to reach Erin’s Advance. who,'driven by her owner, the veteran S. G. Inder, scored one of the most popular wins recorded on the course. Nelbar was three-quarters of a length off third, and Erin’s Star, Captain Wrack, and the favourite were next. ... Bridget dropped out racing across the top, and Jazz Girl Jed Curbenmore, Banner Boy and loor Boy. Curbenmore had Jazz Girl beaten half way down the straight, and was then challenged by Poor Boy. Iho latter finished very fast, and just got up to beat Curbenmore by a nose. Banner Boy, who did not get a good run into the straight, was a length away third, a head in front of Jazz Girl. Sentinel tad and Leading Boy were next. Jack a’ Dandy (£320), Inevitable (£254). Royal Saxon (£251), and Blue Metal (£242) carried the good money in the Borough Handicap. These two were in front rounding the far turn from Full Fling and Inevitable, Wmgatm trailing off the field. Ace of Hearts led into the straight, but was inclined to run wide, and lost some ground in being steadied Inevitable, hull cli-ttg. Jack a’ Dandy, and Attract were close up next.
