Saturday proved another beautiful day at Wingatui, bright sunshine making it possible for the ladies to wear their lightest and daintiest frocks and to carry sunshades which added to the brilliance of the scene on the Owns. A large number of visitors were present attracted by the gloriously fine day, and no doubt by the prospect of seeing N'ightmareh, last year’s bourne Cup winner, racing. Miss Eileen Hanlon, the daughter ol the president of the Jockey Club, who was wearing a beige georcctte irock with a lace coatee and black hat, presented the James Uazictt Gold Cup to Mr A. Louisson, the owner of Nightmare!), amidst loud cheering.

The wives of visiting civil engineers attending the conference hero were entertained by the wives of some of the local members on Tuesday afternoon at the Otago Women’s Club. The hostesses were Mesdamos J. G. Alexander. F. J. Williamson, J. M‘G. Wilkie, Henderson, Cree Brown, T. M. Ball, Richards, Hughes, and Miss Nancy Ayson, and the guests included ?*csdames A. S. Mitchell (Wellington), Hitchcock (Christchurch), 11. J. Bock (Christchurch), Hutton (Invercargill), Corkhill (Invercargill), G. Samson (Greymouth), Rackwoud (Kurow), and Grant.

A very delightful dance was given by Mrs Duncan in Jay’s Tea Rooms on Monday of last week to celebrate flic coming of ago of her daughter Dora. The hostess received her guests wearing a Horal blue satin irock. Miss Dora’s frock was of dainty rose pink crepe de chine trimmed with diamante, while Miss Brouda Fail, who assisted the hostess, was gowned in apple green crepe de chine. Many charming musical items wore contributed by the guests. Supper followed, during w- oh the engagement of Mis* Dora Duncan 'to Harry, youngest son of Mr and Mrs F. Boyer, Claremont, Dunedin, was announced. The rest of the evening was spent in dancing, and was brought to a dose by the singing of 1 Auld Lang Syne.’

Friends interested in foreign mission work are reminded of tho garden party to bo held at the residence < f Mr J. S. Faulkner, Hopetoun, Mornington, on Saturday altenmou ; February 2d. Afternoon tea and ices will be* available in the garden, and stalls will ho set about among the trees.

Mrs G. Spoiglit was hostess at a most delightful party at her residence, York place, on Tuesday afternoon, the guest of honour being Miss Katrina Bardsley, whoso marriage to Mr Hugh Speight takes place early next month. The guests were received' in the drawing loom and lounge, which were most artistically decorated in gladioli in pale tones, with begonias and hothouse flowers in dainty shades of lavender. Mrs Speight’s frock was of all-over black lace, the only ornament being a diamante buckle. Miss Winnie Speight wore a frock of black lace and georgette over shell pink crepe de chine, and crystal beads. Mrs Bardsley was attired in an ensemble of'.black satin beaute, with a black bat, while the bride-to-be chose a beige lace frock and coatee with a Nile green hat, and beads to lone. Tea was served in the dining room, the fable decorations being sweet peas in pastel shades, I'ith dainty foliage. Part of the afternoon was spent in competitions, the prizes being carried off by Mrs T. . Brown. Mrs J. D. Hudson, and Misses Katrina Bardsley and .loyeo Brugh. The guests were Mcsdames J. .J. Following the ceremony in connection with the opening of the Town Hall on Saturday evening, the j ayor and mayoress entertained guests at supper in the new reception rooms, which were looking very lovely, flooded with soft lights and gay with bowls of golden blooms.
