QUEENSLAND CYCLONE
DECLINING IN INTENSITY FLOODS IN MANY PARTS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. BRISBANE, January 7. (Received January 7, at 11.40 a.m.) The Weather Bureau reports that the cyclone is declining in intensity, but serious flooding is threatened in the Herbert Valley and Johnston Rivers following torrential rain. Many places recorded over ten inches for forty-eight hours, Mossraan registering 12iin. Buffeted for twenty-four hours by the cyclone the steamer Morinda reached Cairns nine hours late. The wind reached a velocity of eighty-five miles an hour. The cabins and saloons were flooded. Fears are entertained for the safety of a fishing party aboard a launch which left Cairns on Friday for Moore Reef, where the lugger was wrecked on Saturday morning. All low-lying places north of Cairns are flooded. The mail train reached Townsville through water which was a foot over the rails in many places.
