LARGE NUMBER OF SUICIDES UNEMPLOYMENT AND BAD TRADE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January <5. The ‘ Manchester Guardian’s ’ Berlin correspondent states that there has been an abnormally large number oT suicides since the Now Year. Between January 1 and January 3 there have been thirty-one attempts, twenty-two of which were fatal. Many women gassed themselves, while others drowned, hanged or shot themselves. Two septuagenarians jumped from balconies. The dead include a well-known author and theatre manager who was in financial straits.
Many of the victims were workmen and business pepple who were reduced to desperation by unemployment mci bad trade.’ Seasonal unemployment is approaching its peak and at present there are 1,600,000 throughout Ger many rceiving the dole, while many thousands have exceeded the dole period. The total number of unemployed is -2,200,000, and it is expected to increase. Despite the mild weather the distress is acute.
