NOTES ON THE PRINCIPAL EVENTS
[Special to the Siah,’]
Eaglet dropping out. of the King's* Plate, saw only throe lino up, and backers had no hesitation in making Hunting Cry favourite, with Toxeuma second choice. H. Gray had the mount on Hunting Cry, and as he brought tho horse on to the track from the saddling paddock, he was accorded a round of hand-clapping by some of the crowd. Toxeuma jumped out into the lead and when on the way had a couple of lengths’ break on Hunting Cry and. Historic, who ' were racing abreast. There was no change till crossing the top, where Hunting Cry Went up to within a length of the leader, and so they turned for home. In the run to the judge Hunting Cry did best, and scored by a length, with Historic five lengths back. As Gray brought his mount back he was given three rousing cheers. The sectional times supplied by Mr J. K. Douglas were:— One furlong, 1-lscc; two. 26 l-ssec; three, 38 3-ssec; and the half mile, 52 3-osec.
Had Pegaway, the favourite, jumped out smartly in the < Summer Cup he would have won instead of being beaten by a neck •by an outsider in Royal Doulton, for some distance after the field had been sent away, Pegaway was at the tail of the field, ami it was a groat run which landed him_ so close at the finish. He was favourite, with £1,859, the others to get good backing being Star Stranger (£1,648), and Seatown (£1,533). The winner, Royal Doulton, carried only £592. Panther was first to show out, being soon joined by Merry Mint, and they were the leading pair passing the stand. The first time along the back Panther and Merry Mint were together, showing the way to Seatown and Amor (also together), and then followed Lucy Rose, The Hawk, Royal Doulton, Star Stranger, and Jaloux, with White Fang and Pegaway bringing up the rear. Racing across the cutting Panther dropped bade a little, and Merry Mint went on in front from Lucy Rose, Panther, Seatown, Royal Doulton, Amor, and Transformer, Jaloux falling near the half-mile. Merry Mint led into the straight from Lucy ■ Rose, Royal Doulton, Amor, Vertigern, Panther. Seatown, Star Stranger, with Pegaway now coming along fast on the outside. Half a furlug from home Royal Doulton had the lead, and she lasted long enough to win by a neck from Pegaway, with Amor three-quarters of a length away. Star Stranger was fourth, followed by Vertigern, The Hawk, Merry Mint, Seatown, Transformer, Flying Juliet, and Panther.
A solid I'avourile in Great Star, after being first out from the barrier, failed to finish in the money in the Electric Handicap, for which Lady Qucx was the only one not paraded. Great Star carried £3,133, Cimabue £1,957, Knightlike £1,403, and Leitrim £619. Tea Time and Town Bird got the worst of the start. Great Star being first to move, but he did not keep his position long, and at the top Polyxena -was in front with Vallar, Awarerc, Great Star, and Cimabue handy. Awarerc then ran through to take charge, and he was first to turn for home from Vallar, Polyxena, Leitrim. Great, Star, and Cimabue. In the straight Knightlike came from well back, and finishing strongly, he just got iij) to beat Leitrim by a head, with Polyxena two lengths away. Cimabue was fourth, followed by Awarere, Lady's Boy, Great Star, Taknlama, Tea Time, Vallar, and Town Bird.
