THIEF'S DARING SACRILEGE

OUTRAGE OVER WALTER RALEIGH’S GRAVE. Sacrilege of an unusual character hsS taken place at West Horsley Church, Surrey, where a large piece of a sft and 300-year-old iron railing surrounding the monument of the Nicholas family has been removed. In addition, twelve spikes have been taken from the door leading to the chapel which contains the monument. The removal has been the work of an expert, for great care has been taken to fill the holes in the door with putty, and to paint them over' to match exactly the paint on the door. “Clues have been revealed,” said the rector to the ‘ Sunday Chronicle, “ which are leading the police to make investigations on Ranmore Common, four miles away. “ Beneath the tomb is buried the head of Sir Walter Raleigh, who was beheaded in- 1618.”
