MOVING SOUTH
THE BYRD EXPEDITION PREPARING THE WAY Special to Press Association from the Byrd Expedition by Russell Owen. (Copyright.) BAY OF WHALES, October 26. (Received October 28, at 1 n.m.) The supporting sledging party, which is laying depots halfway to the mountains, or 200 miles from the base, passed the hundred-mile depot and left a good part of the load. The geological party, which went out'a week ago to advance the loads as much as possible and to test the sledging equipment, has reached the hundred‘-mile depot and is returning to camp to overhaul the gear before starting on the final journey. The worst part of the hauling is over for the supporting party, as the heaviest loads were between the forty-four-mile depot (where they picked up the supplies left last year) and the hundred-bnile depot. They had gone eighty-three miles when they camped on the night of the 23rd, and apparently made seventeen more miles next day. The loads hauled by the geological party were found too heavy this trip, and as the result it dropped part of the supplies two days ago after makingsixty miles. Loads aro still large enough, however, so that the party will be able to spend a considerable time at the mountains.
