Saturday’s Racing

“Tote” Figures Again Up 7 Nightmarch Wins In Australia At three ouf of the four meetings held in the dominion on Saturday the totalisator returns showed, satisfactory, increases on the .figures for last year. . , ! At the Moonee Valley Meeting, in Victoria, the New Zealand ... crack, Nightmarch, added another win to his list of victories in Australia.

WELLINGTON MEETING WELLESLEY STAKES TO WATCH OFFICER Tho Wellington Racing Club’s Spring Meeting was opened at Trontham in lino but cold weather. The track was very fast and in good order. The attendance was large. The favourites had a ffad day, but the totalisator returns kept well nj), being £53,090J, as compared with £47,213J for last year, an increase of £6,877. ; Atholspear, in the Wainui Handicap, lost his rider, B. Burgess, who was sent to hospital with a fractured skull. Concluding results; — WELLINGTON HANDICAP, 750sovs. lin and 3f.

The winder who won, at Masterton was always prominent, and finished on in a resolute manner. Tray Bond was not well favoured after a, furlong had been covered, , and experienced a ,rocky passage before the run home -was commenced. Her effort; under the circumstances was full of merit. Chief Link ran a good race, but Ins big weight stopped him at the end. The Chokebore filly, Ball Dress, drew the rails, and did not ’move off as smartly as many of the others, but she was in the picture over the last two furlongs. ,

The Wainui Handicap was responsible for an attractive performance on the part of the favourite, Commendation. Ho gave a lot of trouble at the start, but got away well, and was in sixth place .turning for home. . Admiral Drake, who led from the jump out, was still clear of Latin Quarter, Night Lad, . Cashier, Commendation, and Prickles, but weakened inside the distance and was tackled by Prickles, with Commendation putting in some strong work cm the outside. Prickles was badly interlerred with, by the riderless Atholspear nearing the post, and in a punishing finish Commendation got tip to beat her by a head. Admiral Drake was a length away in third place, a head in front of Black Duke, who was not prominent until the home turn. Keddar, Blimp, Great Charter, Latin Quarter, Vespcrus, and Stanchion finished in that order, with Hynanua last. Atholspear lost his rider after three furlongs had been traversed, and the horse ran with the leading division for the rest of the journey. . Commendation, who had not raced for seven months, showed some of his old dash, and will be an interesting contestant in the Harcourt Cup. Prickles had a rough passage in the straight, being twice interfered with by. Atholspear, otherwise she would have been returned a winner. Latin Quarter and Night Lad were both in prominent positions for . seven furlongs, but petered out in the straight, Night Lad especially stopping badly.

The largo field of twenty-one paraded for the Rimutaka Handicap, the topweight. Sea Cob, being made a thousand-ticket better favourite than Tourist. and Lucky Light. The start was a straggling one, several of the candidates losing their chances at the jump out. After the field had gone two furlongs Lucky Light and Money Mint wore together in front of Park Sea Cob, and Royal Opera. Money Mint had a slight advantage from Lucky Light at the straight entrance, with Tourist, Pari, My Own, and Semper Parntus in close attendance. Semper Paratus made a run on the rails ■'lien turned for home, arid was in ■front at the distance, hut faded out of the picture, with 100yds to go. My Own then looked the winner, but was soon tackled by Royal Black and Tourist, and the finish appeared to rest with this two, but Lucky Light, finishing near the outside rails, appeared on the scene in the dying stages, and gained a meritorious victory _by a length and a-half from -Tourist, who was half a length in front of Roval Black, with My Own ahead away. Then came Pari. Shortly. Royal Opera, Kings Jest, and Semper Paratus.

Fine Acre, Pantagruel, Askari, and Pcshwa were withdrawn from tbo Glen Hurdle Handicap, Aberfeldy and Elysianor closely contesting favouritism. Aberfeldy . acted as pacemaker for the first half-mile, but entering the bade stretell Beaumont and Kapuna took charge and led round iho far turn from Aberfeldy, Trosham, and Brigadier Bill. Kapuna was done with before the home turn was reached, and .Beaumont led into the straight from Aberfeldy, Kapuna, .Tresham, and Brigadier Bill Beaumont withstood all challenges in the run home, and won a good race by a-length from Aberfeldy, who stayed on under punishment to beat the fast-finishing Tresham by a neck. Modern and Kapuna wore together next, and then followed Elysianor and Brigadier Bill, with Novar and Otaura Lass last. _ Beaumont’s win _ was more decisive, than the margin suggested. Aberfcldy ran a good race throughout, and jumped better thair on his last visit, to Trentham. ■ Elysianor was not ridden to the best advantage, and lost-a lot of ground on more than one occasion, and then the gelding finished close up to the place-getters. Kapuna showed promise for a good portion of the journey, but faded out in the last half-mile.

Lucky Light’s finishing effort created a great surprise, as she disappeared from prominence at the distance owing to steering a wide course. Semper Paratus made a bold showing, an cl will improve in his future efforts.

Prince Humphrey was the only detection from the Wellington Handicap, for which the public went strongly for Star Stranger, who carried close on 1,500 tickets more than entrusted to Rabbi. ■ .When the field swept out of the straight Merry Mint took charge and led along the back from Tcheka. Talisker, Piiitbajr, Paitonu, Rabbi, Eoylake, Star Stranger, and Spearmiss There was little change at the far turn, and entering the home run Merry Mint retired, and Talisker went to the front and led into the straight from Paitonu, Black Mint, Rabbi, Merry Mint, In the Shade, and Seatown. Talisker cried enough at the distance, and Seatoun with a fast run from tho back assumed command. His effort was short-lived, as Rabbi and In the Shade quickly collared him, and this pair settled down to an exciting finish, tho latter getting in the deciding stride to gain tho honours by a head. Seatoun was twb lengths away, slightly in front of Tcheka. Star Stranger, who was last at the far turn, was next, an I was followed by Talisker, Piuthair, Hoylakc, Mint, and Courageous, Yoma being the last to pass tho post. Seajeun looked a winner nearing the post, but failed to see out the journey. Eloylake started from the out-, side, but at the far turn moved into tho rails. He failed to make much showily? in this position, and although he executed a promising effort' in the straight he was well beaten at the finish. * » * •

Tho public received a setback, when sSimba and Satisfy failed to make a return in the Wellesley Stakes. The field was reduced to ten runners, Simba being made a strong choice with 1,600 more tickets than carried by-Satisfy The latter, with Nimble, Simba, and Chrysology, were the first prominent but Satisfy was supplanted at the false rail by Nimble, who led on to the course proper from Satisfy, Simba, Chrysology. and Watch Officer. Once in lino for home the last-named shot to tho front and soon placed tho issue beyond doubt, winning by two lengths from_ Chrysology, who beat the favourite by a length. Satisfy was close up next in front of Nimble, Pass On, King Musket, and Peep, with Intruder: last. The winner outclassed the opposition and gave A. E. Ellis his first winning tide in the event. The time,. 60£. was the fastest since tho distance was increased to five furlongs in 1922. Chry sology was allowed to drop back aftei being prominent early, and then finished strongly. Simba had every chance, but failed to complete the task as well as anticipated. Satisfy was not seen at her best, owing to seasonal trouble, faded out over the last furlong. King Musket was slow to

#' ■* « . « The Taita Handicap produced a field of sixteen two-year-olds. Tray Bond, drawn well out, got away smartly, and had a slight advantage at the end of a furlong, but before the false rail was reached, Lady Bam, Chief Link, and Gesture were in front of her. Tray Bond again asserted herself, and led on to the course proper from Gesture. Chief Link Lady Pam, and Merry Bill, The Riccarton filly still held her advantage till well '"side, the distance, but Gesture always had her measure oyer the final stages, and heat her homo by a bare length. Chief Link was only a neck away, with Lady Pam, .Ball Dress, and Merry Peel together nest, in front of Joie do Val, Zcphyrus, and Sporting Chance.

move off, and was well back at the straight entrance. • * * * Pagnnelli was made a slightly better favourite than tho bracketed pair Silver Paper and Aspiring for tho Shorts Handicap, and bo carried bis supporters through after a close finish. Aspiring was the most prominent from the start, and lea on to the course proper from Francolin, Silvermine, Banket, Paganoili, ami Toxeuma. Aspiring led till well inside the distance, but retired beaten, and Paganelli was left in charge. The latter was challenged by Tor mina, and in a neck-aml-neck tussle ."aganclli stuck to his task to <secure the verdict by a short neck. First Money beat Aspiring on the post for third money, two lengths a way, and then, came Silvermine, Banket, Silver Paper, Reremoana, Goshawk, and Full Mark.

Paganelli’s effort under his solid im post was one of the features of the meeting, and this was enhanced by the .fact that he conceded a powerful galloper in 'Toxeuma over a stone and a beating. Aspiring showed much improvement on her Dunedin running, and will do. better later. Silver Paper was jjgyer in a winning position, and his form must have been disappointing to his connections. Speed Light and Francolin ran good races, the latter especially giving promise till well into tho straight. • * * •* The scratching pen was freely used in the concluding event, but there were still twenty-one starters. Clarendon was the medium of heavy support, but could do no better than occupy fifth place at the finish. The winner, Juggle, was not well placed early, but made a great run in the straight, and cutting down the leaders Auda, Monaloff, and Taurua inside tho distance went on to beat the last-named by a length. Auda was a similar distance away third, and then followed Richfield, Clarendon, Nali, Royal Parade, Monaloff, Duellona, and Arrowhead. The start w - as again unsatisfactory , t i Dancing Star being badly left, while! Phastar was turned round when the barrier lifted, and was. not persevered with, cantering home behind the field.

Etta Colo and Gold Sovereign also had a good following. Thev accepted the explanation from T. Roe, driver of Gold Sovereign, that he tried his best to keep his horse straight.

WHY PETER BINGEN DID HOT START [Special to the * Stae.’] AUCKLAND, October 28.
