OBITUARY

MR L. G. GOOCH For over forty years Mr L. C. GocrK was tho traveller for Briscoe and Co.’s Dunedin liouso on the engineering side* of its business, closely in touch with foundries and contractors, also with commercial circles generally, and tho announcement of his death is causing sincere regret, for ho was respected by, ail who knew him as a very worthy man, of the quiet, typo, not given t<» talking, but diligent in action. H» was at the firm’s office on Thursday, morning of last week, seemingly in hi -9 customary good health, but before luncheon was seized by what is commonly called “ a stroke,” and he died oil Wednesday of this week, leaving his wife with two sons and two daughters* Mr Gooch was of English birth, being born in Devonshire sixty-nine years ago, and ho had the English manner. Ho was educated in France and at Eton. When fjuite young ho came If* Otago and obtained employment with A. and T. Burt. In November of ISsq lie joined Briscoe and Co.’s service, and. continued with that firm all the rest oh his life. Mr Gooch was accomplished in many directions. For many years he was one of tho Opoho Cricket Club'* reliable batsmen. In 1893-94 ho was one of the Otago team against Southland, and in 1899 ho played for an Otago thirteen against a New Zealand thirteen that was on its way to Australia. Yachting was another of his sports* He could sail a boat with anybody, fit handling a gun after hares or any game he was quite expert even so recently ns last year. He was also a sound musician, and, though few knew it, for ho never showed off, he could make good music on the piano.
