FREEZING MONOPOLY FEARED

“ DESPERATELY URGENT 11 POSITION [Pea United Peesb Association.] WELLINGTON, October 23. The danger of big vested interests obtaining a monopoly of the freezing industry in the dominion was referred to as “desperately urgent” at the meeting of the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union, and, after discussion, a motion was carried supporting and endorsing the principles of the Meat Export Control Amendment Bill now before Parliament. The president (Mr W. J. Poison) said at present the farmers’ co-operative works were hanging on by the skin of their teeth, and there was a grave danger of the big vested interests securing complete control of_ ■the < frozen meat industry. “Speaking with some knowledge,” said Mr Poison, “ I can tell you that the matter is desperately urgent.” Mr R. Sim (Southland) said that the farmers of the dominion had set up a Meat Board to attend to their interests, and they looked to that board to protect their interests. It almost appeared that the Meat Board was deserving of censure for not having brought an amendment Bill down itself. # The following resolution was carried:—“Having in view the growing and menacing power of big meat exporting interests in the dominion, this executive supports and endorses the principles contained in the Meat Export Control Amendment Bill at present before Parliament.”

A motion was .carried requesting the Meat Board to convene a meeting of delegates to discuss policy matters the day prior to the annual meeting of the board.
