BEWARE THE SIMPLE LIFE

BOREDOM AS LUNACY CAUSE LONDON, September 23. “Beware of the simple life.” is the warning of Dr Edward Mapother, psychological physician to the King’s College Hospital. Boredom, according to the doctor, probably causes more lunacy than anything else, and the aim of mental hygiene should be the abolition of madness, badness, and sadness. The slogan should be, “It is better to live dangerously than pawkily.” Other doctors, stirred into active agreement by Dr Mapother, have given a list of reasons for dangerously living. A FEW DON’TS. Among the don’ts are the following:— Don’t live in a cottage. Don’t think about yourself. Don’t be idle. Don’t fear overwork. “If you live- quietly in a country cottage,” says Professor Alexander Erskine. the well-known neurology expert, ‘‘there is a grave danger that you will look at yourself and become neurotic. “ Idleness is an evil, and an active and even dangerous life is really less dangerous than that quiet cottage. “Women who are married and left alone often tKjjsk ias much of themselves. and become serious and neurotic. “ The best advice to them is to snap their fingers at convention, and have some occupation,”
