EMPIRE BOOKS BARTHELMESS TALKIE Richard Barthelmess ipay now be heard as well as seen. The star of two score silent features, famed for his 1 Broken Blossoms ’ and ‘ Tol’able David,’ will be heard for the first time in ‘ Wearj’ River,’ his latest First National starring feature,' which will come to the Empire Theatre next Friday. In ‘ Weary River ’ Barthelmess not onlytalks, but plays the piano. A Vitaphone test proved his voice of excellent quality for talking pictures, and advance notices predict unprecedented success for the initial .Barthelmess talkie. ‘ Weary Rivei' is from the short story of Courtney Ryley Cooper, adapted to the ■screen by Bradley King, and directed by Frank Lloyd. It relates the story of a convict who sings over the radio, wins a parole, becomes famous, and wins the love of a girl. Jt is a wide departure from anything Barthelmess has done heretofore, and offers him a new kind of cliaracterisation.. The east supporting Barthelmess is headed by Betty Compson. who recently played the feminine leads in Barthelmess’s ‘ Scarlet Seas.’ Others in the cast .include William r ' >lden, Raymond Turner,- George Stom. ’ ouis Natheaux, and Robert O’Connor.
