IS A BABY “AN ACT OF GOD”?
THEATRICAL DISPUTE IN AMERICA
The question whether a babv is an act of God or merely a human incident is being decided by the American Arbitration Association on the appeal from the Actors’ Equity Association, says the ‘ Daily Telegraph’s New York correspondent. The question arose when the producers of Coquette ’ closed the performance because the leading lady, Helen Hayes, was about to become a mothei. The management argued that babies were the same as fires and earthquakes—namely, acts of God, and therefore a week’s notice to the cast was unnecessary. The cast protested. Helen remained impartial, saying she was content merely to have a baby. The arbitration award is awaited with bated breath. A later message states that the Equity Association decided that a baby wa no, an act of God and' that the cast was therefore entitled to be paid.
