WHIPPET RACING

DUNEDIN CLUB’S MEETING A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE From small beginnings, whippet racing'has grown in favour, and the first big meeting promoted here by the Dunedin Whippet Racing Club at Tahuna Park on Saturday afternoon attracted a good crowd of spectators, which, was treated to some fast and exciting racing. The tracks were in good order, Tahuna- Park being ideally situated for whippet racing. The races were run in two wire and rope lanes, large fields being -the rule. The : competing dogs included several from Christchurch and Invercargill, one of the most successful owners being Mr G. S. A. Biltcliff, of Christchurch, whose _ Hermes secured first, second, and third. The Brewer, owned by Mrs T. H. Brewer (Invercargill), secured a first and a second, and the principal event, the Dunedin Cup Handicap, was won by Tasman Flight owned by Mr B. Hobbs, of Dunedin. Fast times were the .order of the day, and the races throughout -were well contested. The control of the meeting left nothing to be desired, the secretary (Mr H. Divers) having arrangements well in hand. Mr J. S. Douglas was the marshall, and Messrs R. Blackwood and R, Aitcheson were the judges. Mr F. J. Townsend was the timekeeper, the starter being Mr A. G. Burk. Mr E. G. Price was the handicapper, and Messrs J. A. Ainge, J. H. Fotheringham, and B. S. Irwin acted as track stewards. At the conclusion of thS meeting, the prizes were presented by the president of the club (Mr J. S. Douglas), who thanked all who had assisted to make the meeting a success, and also expressed pleasure at the presence of thp secretary of the National Whippet Association (Mrs Biltcliff). Also started, Messrs Todd and Jelley’s blk d Warepa (Minnow —Young Pepper). Gold Tinge shot away from the. start and was in the lead at halfway, winning by 10yds; Byds between second and third. The dogs were hunched at the 75yd mark, but Gold Tinge and Hermes then drew' away and fought out an exciting finish, the former winning by a nose. Bonny Mary came fast over the last bit to finish _third, three lengths back. Time, 12 2-ssec. SAPLING STAKE, Sweepstake, 150 yards; entry, 10s. Winner 75 per cent, of stake, runner-up 25 per cent.
