BOWLING

OPENING CEREMONIES Five clubs made a start on Saturday afternoon in favourable weather, and the season is now fairly under way. An official touring party, comprising Messrs C. J. Payno (dominion president), D. C. Cameron (Dunedin Centre president), J. J. Marlow, A. J. Sullivan, R. H. Ledlie, and R. Hanning, visited each of the city greens. CALEDONIAN CLUB. Caledonian Club green was filled_ with players, including numerous visitors, and there were many ladies and onlookers on the banks. Mr W. H. M’Leod (president) made a happy welcoming speech, and thanked all who had assisted in the preparations. Mr C. J. Payne (president of the Dominion Association) and Mr H. Rowley (on behalf of the centre) wished the club every success, and the mayor (Mr R, S. Black) congratulated the club on its prosperity. Apologies from the Hon. T. K. Sidey and the Hon. W. B. Taverner were read, and then Mrs M‘Leod rolled the first bowl and the players got to business. The pavilion was tastefully decorated by lady friends, and the president gave them especial thanks for generous support, specially mentioning Mrs C. F, Greenslade and Mrs Blaney. Piper Yardley was in evidence, and the St. Kilda Band enlivened proceedings with first-class music. ST. CLAIR CLUB. Success in every way attended the opening by St. Clair Club on Saturday. Members, well-wishers, and players from other clubs made up a very big party, and they were delighted with the welcome by Mr H. Halliday (president) and his wife, also with the profuse yet artistic decorations, with the liberallydispensed tea, and with the music by Gordon’s Orchestra. On all hands, too, the appearance of the green was much admired. It looks as if it will play true and fast after a week or two’s use. The committeemen express appreciation of the work put in by Mr D. MTntosh (supervisor), Mr T. Thomson (groundsman), and various helping membei’s, and thanks are speciallv accorded to Mr Harrison (the Balmacewcn Club’s supervisor) for his superintending of the top-dressing in both autumn and spring and his advice generally. Mr Halliday impressed upon members the duty of caring for the green in all ways and refraining from grumbling if it had to be closed sometimes so as to be in perfect order for play. He also mentioned that twelve new playing ifiembers had already joined this year. Mr J. Forster (Dunedin Centre) conveyed the good wishes of that body, and asked for co-operation in the arrangements for the dominion tournament. Mrs Halliday rolled up the first bowl, and play started at once. The official party visited t.lie green later, also the Mayoi of St. Kilda (Mr R. W. Hall) and his wife, and were properly received.

ST, KILDA CLUB, A very large number of visitors attended St. Kilda Club green on Saturday afternoon. Mr E. S. Wilson (president), in his speech of welcome, made reference to the loss the-club had sustained through the death of Mr J. M. Gallaway, a foundation member. He thanked lady friends for their assistance, and made special allusion to Mr J. H. Hinton’s work in the way of decorating the pavilion. A few remarks were made by Mr D. C. Cameron (president of the centre), Mr J. J. Marlon (Dominion Council), and Mr R. W. Hall (Mayor of St. Kilda). Mrs E. 8. Wilson then sent up the first" bowl, and a pleasant game followed. Begg’s Orchestra played lively music. PORT CHALMERS CLUB. The Port green was formally opened on Saturday afternoon, there being present, in addition to the members, a number of visitors. Afternoon tea in the pavilion was dispensed by the ladies. The president (Mr Isaac Stevenson) was not present, and Mr W. J. Wilson (vice-president) expressed the members’ deep regret and sympathy with Mr Stevenson in his recent bereavement. Mr Wilson mentioned the fact that the next season would be opened on the club’s new green. Mr J. Veitch (on behalf of the centre) wished the club success, a sentiment which was also expressed by Mr J. Y. Love and Mr W. J. Love (mayor). The mayoress rolled the first bowl, and an enjoyable game followed. ANDERSON’S BAY CLUB. Anderson’s Bay Club held a most successful opening on Saturday, members and friends being present in force. The president (Mr A. J. Gall) feelingly referred to the loss sustained by the death of an old and esteemed member (Mr W. Paterson), and then extended a hearty welcome to all present. They would find the green in good condition, and thanks were due to those who had worked so assiduously to bring about such a great improvement. Mr _J. Allan (representing the centre) briefly addressed those present, after which Mrs Gall rolled up the first bowl (the time-honoured “toucher”), and the green was immediately filled to capacity by members and visiting bowlers. Afternoon tea was served by a willing band of ladies, and music was provided by Death’s Orchestra. In the evening the members of the club entertained the ladies at the Wilford Tea Rooms, where music, dancing, and cards provided pleasant entertainment.
