A Press Association telegram from Hamilton states that at the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday Rosina Land, a. married woman with a family, was fined £2O on three charges of shoplifting from a local auction mart. The dispersal sale of the late Sir R. D. D. M'Lcan’s Maracka>iho stud was continued at the Valley harm on Saturday morning, when the remainder of the well-known Shorthorns were disposed of. A splendid line of heifers was offered. The top price was 41gs, paid by Mr D. G. Wright (Canterbury) for a yearling, Maraekakaho Secret—Lady the Second. Mr J. Scott (Canterbury) purchased three splendid animals at an average price of 36gs. Up to the luncheon adjournment the highest price among the bulls was 90gs, which was paid by the Manawhaka Estate (Oamaru) for a four-year-old, Maraekakaho —Bold Baron. A large attendance of members of the staffs of both the Wellington district office and the head office of the Public Works Department tendered a farewell to Mr A. Downer, who was until'recently in charge of the Tawa Flat deviation works, and who has accepted the offer of a position with Messrs Hansford, Mills, and Co. at a much better salary. The Chief District Engineer (Mr R. 11. Ronayno) said they were sorry they had lost such a very capable officer.. The Engincor-in-Clucf (Mr F. W. Furkert) expressed the hope that Mr Downer would he as well treated in the frssh fields ho was seeking as ho had been in the Public Works Department. Ho said it seemed to be the fate of the Public Works Department to bo the training ground for men in other organisations. He did not admit that all the good men left the department—(laughter)—but there had been so many One was a professor at Canterbury College; and there was Mr Thomas, of the City Council staff; Mr Kemp, now engineer and manager of a power board; Mr Wilson, engineer of the Waitemata Power Board; and a number of others, it was evidently recognised that the men in the Public Works Department were good ones. Mr Furkert then presented Mr Downer with a handsome clock on behalf of the staffs of both branches of lie department. '
