BOROUGH JUBILEE

MEMORIAL UNVEILED [Pat United Pkess Association.] WAI.MATE, October 17. A unique memorial commemorative of tho Waimatc Borough’s golden jubilee was unveiled this afternoon in the presence of a, largo gathering. Iho memorial is a replica of a Mauri_ meet-ing-house, and genuine old Maori carvings were secured for the front. 'lhe building is placed across a. corner m Seddon square, and provides both a striking memorial and a useful shelter. Four marble tablets inside preserve the memorv of Mr Michael Studliolmc, the first white settler, Chief liuruhuru, with whom Mr Stmlholmo fraternised on his arrival, and also the first mayor and council and the jubilee mayor ami council. Chief lliiruhuru's tablet was fittingly unveiled by a young Maori named Thomas, tho chief’s grandson. Airs Studholine's tablet was unveiled by Mrs Boyle, a daughter of Mr Studholme; the first council’s tablet by Miss Manchester, daughter of the first mayor; and tho jubilee council’s tablet by the mayoress ('Airs Dash).

’ Prior to the ceremony a precession half a mile long, with three bands, passed through llio streets, which were crowded with townspeople and visitors, to Victoria Park, where appropriate addresses were given by Messrs F. C Studhnhno (iho first settler's son), George Finn (president of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association, and a son of the first town clerk), W. Is. Fvans, F. Nash (past mayors), H. Ah Whatman (Wnimute County representative), and George Dash (mayor). The procession provided _ a Jilting pageant of progress, starting Irom a bullock team and wagon and. including the hooded buggy used tho first mayor, a bicycle, and the first, motor ear used in the district up to tho latest in cycles, motor cycles, and _ cars ns seen in the trades display sections.

Tho jubilee celebrations will he concluded on Saturday night with dancing in Queen street under the multi-col-oured lights of tho electric decorations.
