MOTDR CAR’S .MISHAP COLLISION WITH POLE Such was the force with which a Studebaker sedan motor car, travelling at a high rate of speed, Lit an Biu by Sin iroubark electric liglit pole at the junction of the high and low, roads at the Normanby tram terminus shortly after 9 o’clock last night, that the pole was snapped in two close to the ground. The car proceeded over the stump till it struck_ an iron pojo thirty yards on supporting the overhead tram wire, the engine being badly, damaged. The occupants of the car, two young men, who had borrowed it without permission from a social function. left the vehicle and reported the accident to Mr Hanlon, the owner* of the car. Some time after 9 o’clock Constable Harris, of North-east Valley, was advised that a car was on fire _at the Normanby terminus, and he immediately summoned the brigade. When it arrived it was found that there was a small blaze, which was quickly extinguished, some of the wiring being damaged by the flames. The windscreen of the car was spattered with blood. It is understood that the occupants of the car are now known to the police, who are investigating the matter. The damage done to the electric wiring when the pole was broken put out of action the lights on the Upper Junction road and in nearby houses, and a resident a quarter of a mile distant stated that he thought there Jirtd been an earthquake, as the shock was felt in his house. One of the occupants was badly cub about the face, but on inquiry from Mr Hanlon we have ascertained that when he saw them there 'was no indication that liquor had had any part in the accident. which was . caused by the car; skidding on the wet road.
