[From Oua Correspondent.] BALCLUTHA, August ]3. Bowling.—The annual meeting pl'the Balclutha Bowling Club was hold during: last week, when there was a fair attendance. The balance-sheet as presented showed that the club: had started off with a_ debit balance ,of £SO 19s sd, and finished with-a credit of £?. 8s lid. This satisfactory state, ■of affairs was brought about by a gala day, which'netted £SO ,1s 3d, a donation of £2O from the Winter Club, and tho increase in subscriptions. The following office-bearers were elected; — President, Mr J. Johnston; senior vicepresidCnt, Mr F. M. Poynter; junior. Mr F. L.. Barr; secretary, Mr A'. Riach; auditor, Mr Poynter; selectors and handicappers, Messrs A. Hayward and J. M'Namara; ■ green supervisor, Mr ‘A. Buchanan; games controllers, Messrs A. Marshall and Barr; delegates to centre, Messrs Johnston and M'Namarap committee—Messrs D. Mlchio,, S. White, C. O’Hara, Alarshall, Hayward, and Watt. It was decided to 'invito the St. Hilda Club to visit Balclutha on Labour Hay. It was also decided to .semi a remit to the centre asking that the' South Otago tournament bo open to all-comors. Girl Guides. —The annual meeting of the Balclutha Association' was hold cm Thursday night, tho mayor (Air S. V. White) presiding over a good attendance. Provincial Commissioner Airs Andrews, of Dunedin, was present, and w ; ns accorded a hearty welcome. The following office-bearers were duly elected:—President, Mrs S. V. White; vice-presidents, Alesdames J. Sloan and (1. Reid: committee —Alesdames Jas. Guest, AVV Hutchins, G. Clinch, 1). Wallace, W. S. Thomson, T. Thompson,, 1). Dallas. J. Clark, find Aliss Af. Dallas. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet were unanimously adopted. Short addresses on Guide matters were delivered by Commissioner Andrews and Air John Reid, 8.A., and they were accorded hearty voles of thanks. Herd-testing.—Tho c/annual meeting of the Stirling group of the OtagoSouthland Herd-testing Association was hold at Stirling on Friday night, there being an excellent attendance of members. Amongst those present were Alossrs G. R. Herron, A. Al. Weir, Norton, and H. Oswin, from Southland. The report showed that during the year 1,394 cows had been under tost. Tho highest cow produced 5721 b fat, and the lowest 461 b. The year closed with a credit of £l3 11s, on top of which there was a subsidy of £(SO 12s. Air L. _Colbourne had been appointed tester in. place of Air Fairbairn. who had loft tho district. It was decided that tho subsidy be paid out to members on_tho basis of Is per cow. The following resolution was carried’;—“ That this meeting of dairy farmers expresses its disappointment with the attitude towards mnmmitis and other diseases, and urges that vigorous research bn carried out in connection therewith.” A discussion took place on tho policy of the Dairy Control Board, hut no resolution was forthcoming. The following office-bearers-were elected:—Messrs A. A. Jensen, C. Weir, J. F. Risset, Q. Murdoch, P. Dinpio, 11. G. Cuthbortson, and 11. Anderson. Messrs Jensen and Anderson wore elected delegates to the association meetings, which arc held at Gore. After the meeting an enjoyable hour or two was spent in social intercom',sc.

Schools’ Sport.—On Thursday a team of third grade players from- the Otago Boys’ High School visited Baiclutha and played the South Otago High School team at "Rugby. The result was a win for the visitors by It) points In 4, after a bright and interesting exhibition. On Saturday the primary ■schools of South Otago had a field day in Rugby and basket hall. The games were all played at Baiclutha, and the Rugby resulted in Baiclutha School winning the South' Otago shield for the second year in succession. In the morning Toko defeated Kaifcangata by' 11 points to 0, and they in turn wore defeated in the afternoon by Baiclutha by 15 points to G. In the basket ball Toko School won most of thn _ games. In tliis division-the schools taking part were 'Toko, Baiclutha, Kaitar.gala, Clinton, and Stirling. Obituary.—During the week two old residents of the South Otago district have passed away. The first of those was Mrs Lctitia Hay, who was horn at Nottingham, and came to-New' Zealand forty-three years ago. After living in Dunedin and Central Otago she came with her family jo the Catlin.s district, whore she resided for about forty years. Besides a husband she leaves a family of six—Mrs C. Ashmore (Owaka), Mesdames Wilson, O’Connell, and L. Simpson (of Dunedin), Messrs Hay (Tahakopa) and F. Hay (Cambridge). The' other death to record is that-of Mr John Campbell, of Owaka, who was born in Perthshire and rmne to the dominion with Ins wife and family forty-two years ago. ,Aftcr a period of three years in and about Dunedin they shifted to the Gatlins district, and have been there ever since. Deceased leaves a widow and two sons and five daughters to mourn. They arc Messrs A. Campbell (Scotland), Peter (N.S.W.). and Mesdames Crouch and Kerr (Auckland), Edwards (Waiwera). and Misses M. and L. Campbell (Owaka)._ Football.—There was a big crowd of South Otago Rugby enthusiasts at the Otago-Southhind match yesterday. Over 150 passengers booked by fhe special train from here, and goodly numbers joined the train on route. In addition, a number made the journey by car. Keen interest is being taken "in the visit of the Otago team to Milton on Saturday, when they play a Smith Otago team. Enthusiasts arc looking forward to a good exhibition. On September 7 the winners of the •second grade competition in Dunedin will play a South Otago rep. team at Baiclutha.

Dedication Ceremony,—On Saturday night an interesting ceremony look place at Balclutha, when the new 1.0.0. F. Hall was dedicated. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from all the South Otago branches of the order, yvhilo other orders were also, well represented. N.(l I To. 11. C. Miller presided. D.D.G.M. Tiro. Randle introduced the G.M. for New Zealand, Bro. D.. F. Smillie, of Palmerston North, aiql after the N.G. had extended a welcome the G.M. .took charge of the proceedings. Those assisting in the dedication service were;—Grand Chaplain, Dm. G. Bolton; Grand Heralds— Bros. R. S. Kirkham. J. MTvor, G, S. Carson, and C. Wardrop; Grand Marshal, Bro, G. 0. Gordon, and D.G.M., Bro. G. Somerville. The building of the altar was a very interesting ceremony.- The foundation was a symbol of purity, and the altar was built up with .symbol-* of friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, and crowned with charity. Then followed _ the sprinkling of water, the spreading of wheat and flowers, and the lighting of the lamp. These little ceremonies completed, the G.M then dedicated the hall to the work ot the order and wished the lodge all success. Apologies were received from the Lady D.G.M. and Tokomainro- Lodge. Representatives of Loyal Dalton (M.U.), Masonic, Orange, and the various district lodges of tho 1.0.0. F. congratulated the Clutha Lodge on the step they bad taken, and wished them all success in their new'quarters. D.D.G.M. Bro. Kirkham extended congratulations

on behalf of the South Otago district, and Bro. W. Handle on behalf of the South-east Otago district. Following tho ceremony a pleasant hour or two was spent in dancing, all present having a very / enjoyable time. A nice supper was dispensed, , and was much appreciated. During an interval the G.AI. presented Bro. D. Wallace with a jewel m, recognition of the lengthy service he had given the lodge in the position of treasurer, and the recipient suitably replied.:
