It is announced that Mr L. A. Paisb* the successor to Mr L, B. Beale as British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, will arrive in the dominion at the end of this month. Mr Eaish left England on July 26 by the Comoran, and is due here in three weeks’ time. Mr G. F. Booth, rector of tho_ Port Chalmers District High School, is retiring from the service next month.He has a fine record, having been a teacher for forty-nino years, the past twenty-one as rector at Port Chalmers. '• Mr Booth has taken an active interest in matters beyond the sphere of actual teaching, and Mrs Booth was an out- * standing figure in .the ladies’ patriotic movement during the war, Mr and Mrs Booth had five sons at the front. A private telegram advises as to the death of Mrs Mary Northcote at the Hutt (Wellington) yesterday. She was a daughter of Mr Thomas Jones, who came to --Wnikouaiti in 1840 with his brother, Mr John Jones. Hdr husband, who died several years ago, held responsible positions at Dunedin and Invercargill in the employ of Sargood, Son, and Ewen.
