SCIENTISTS MISSING

VOLCANO DEATHS IN JAPAN s L TOKIO. July 30. Koxnagatake, the volcano thirty' miles north, of Hakodate, which broke into eruption yesterday, has not only overwhelmed villages, but has also caused loss of life. Six scientific observers who ventured on to the slopes of the mountain are missing, and some villagers aro known to have been killed. Tho eruption was continued with great vigour this morning, throwing ashes and lava over a large area to the southward. Five villages have already' been buried, in some places the ashes and lava being over 10ft deep, while wide districts are covered to the depth of 2ft, Most of Hie inhabitants in the villages at the foot-of the volcano bad ample opportunity to escape. The loss of life is therefore not great considering tho volume of the eruption. Professor Tmamura, of tho Imperial University, estimates that the eruption will continue for a week.
