LIVING IN GLASS HOUSES

' HOMES SOLD BY MAIL ORDER _ CHICAGO, July IS. People will live in real glass houses, and this before the end of 1938. Mr Pierre Blouke, a prominent architect of Chicago, makes this statement, stating that such homes will be made in factories, sold 1 by mail order, and delivered within forty-eight hours by motor lorry. Heat will be furnished by electric light bulbs that will illuminate the house, bu not much heat will be required, because the interior walls will be two thicknesses of plate glass,_ with space between, which will .provide a vacuum that will make the houses warm in winter and cool in summer. Moreover, he foresees those houses with all the essential f furniture built in and fastened down, as is the furniture aboard ships; while, to complete this wonder home, every house will have a built-in typewriter or two, so that mother may type her menus and the children do their lessons. Mr Harvey Wiley Corbett, of New York, chairman of the Chicago World’s Fair (1933) Agricultural Committee, is arranging to build the first house of this type for his wife within the next year. Mr Blouke believes that it will not be four years before homes will be manufactured like motor cars in certain centres, and assembled in stra getically -situated to be delivered when completed. “ You may then buy a home for at least half the cost of the present home,” he adds.
