FIRST CHANCE TO LOCAL MEN NELSON, July 2. Ai a meeting of the Murchison Emergency Committee to-day the matter ol the employment of the settlers at Murchison was discussed, The District Engineer of Public Works (Mr L. May) announced that tho Public Works Department had issued instructions to give the first chance to local distressed settlers, and arrangements had been made accordingly. 1 ’ Labour Mould be recruited at Murchison, and when this M as absorbed a call M’oulcl ho made on the refugees in Nelson. It m-ouIJ probably bo three days before extra men from Nelson could be given road M'ork. In answer to a question, Mr May said the department could not absord an indefinite number of men until provision was made for their accommodation. It M’as resolved to ask the Murchison people in Nelson requiring road M’ork to register at the County Council Chambers.
