VARIETY AT EMPIRE

HEW PROGRAMME TO-MORROW PARTLY “ TALKIE. - ’ Although the Empire Theatre has been installed with a Western electric “talkies” apparatus, the management does not intend tu offer “ all-talkie ” programmes. The big p ictures will be synchronised, but the short subjects will all be silent. ‘ Give and Take,’ an all-talking comedy attraction, which is still having record seasons in Sydney and Melbourne, is the first movietone to be booked for the Empire, and it will head the new programme to-morrow. It is tlie story of two Jewish partners, who in their bickerings provide as funny comedy material as lias- ever been woven into a picture of any typo. A love story runs through the production, which stars George Sydney, Jean Hcrsholt, George Lewis, and Sharon Lynn. the musical side of the entertainment variety is also apparent. Miss Rita .Holmes, a popular local vocalist, will sing Gounod’s ‘ Ave Marin,’ and will be accompanied by Miss E. Wallace on the violin and Leslie Harvey on the organ. Mr Harvey will present Schubert’s 1 Serenade ’ and ‘ The Doll Dance,’ and will also play with the Empire Orchestra (under the direction of M. lie Rose) in the overture ‘ Montana ’ ('Wallace), A special musical score has been selected for the orchestra to accompany the screening of the pictures.
