Prayers are being offered in the churches and the market places imploring God to remove the danger. Hundreds of thousands of people are watching the magnificent spectacle. A pillar of smoke, shot with incandescent streaks, is spreading over the ■ volcanoe’s crest. (Received June 5, at II a.m.) A report from Naples states that Trofessor Malladro, director of the observatory, announces 'that the activity of Vesuvius lias greatly increased. Explosions continue, throwing up huge quantities of molten material. The cone is belching out a lava river, twenty metres wide, with an initial speed of two metres petsecond. It has completely filled Hell Valley with incandescent lava, which is overflowing the valley's entire length, destroying the small village of Barre, which the inhabitants evacuated.

Lava is now threatening the village of Teraigno, on which a fiery stream 90ft wide and Sft high is advancing at a speed of 128 ft per hour. It is at present 100 metres from the village, part of which has been evacuated. Hundreds of motor lorries are standing in the main square ready to remove the remainder of the inhabitants and their possessions.
