A most .successful function was held in Arthur Street Hull, when Mr and Mrs Mazey, of Russell street, entertained friends on the occasion of their only son’s coming of age. A very happy evening was spent with music, dancing, and games. Mrs Arnold Perry (Hokitika), who is visiting her parents, was guest of honour at an afternoon party given by Mrs John Leech, High street. Other guests wore Mrs J. Aitchcson, Misses G. Melville, B. and A. Kinaston, V. and E. M‘Curdy, B. Sin cock, I. Blackwood, M. Burn, and J. Allen. During the afternoon Mrs Perry delighted all with her singing.

There was a very large attendance of dancers at the cabaret in. the Tudor Hall on Saturday. Manv visitors who were in town for the races and the Winter Show availed themselves of the opportunity of dancing under ideal conditions.

At the monthly meeting of Koslyn brand) of the Otago Home Economics Association, held last Thursday evening. Mr F. Johnson gave a most interesting talk on suport of local industries. Mr Johnson pointed out that New Zealand, with its smaller population, imported four times the amount of footwear as did Australia. “ New Zealand-made goods,” said Mr Johnson, “ are equal in quality to those of other countries, and if buyers ask for New Zealand-made goods, and refuse to take the imported varieties, much might be done to solve the problem unemployment, which is so prevalent.’ The speaker also pointed out that women were among the greatest offenders in this respect, as they were large buyers of imported goods. Some ol the operations necessary in the making of a pair of shoes, together with the different materials used in the process, were shown. At the conclusion of the lecture many questions were answered, and a hearty vote of thanks accorded the speaker.

The monthly meeting of the Wakari branch of the Otago Home Economics Association was held on Wednesday, evening at the residence of Mrs WT B. Lamond, the secretary. Mrs fe. Knights presided over a fair attendance 1 of members. During the evening Mrs G. Brock bank gave a practical demonstration of dressmaking, and was able to offer many practical hints. After supper a pleasant social hour was spent.

Racing at Wingatui during the week has been held under ideal conditions. Brilliant sunshine on Saturday put everyone in a proper holiday mood, and on Monday although the weather was a, little colder, it was still very delightfill. The racecourse is ideally situated for a winter meeting, catching as it does every ray of sunshine In Juno one expects to find winter coats prodominating, and'many very beautiful ones were seen, with rich iur trimmings. Although navy blue and black were the outstanding shades for these, bright lined hats, and an occasional glimpse of pretty frocks underneath, kept the general effect From being sombre.
